I am a writing machine right now, people. Having redone my Cymbalistic site, and moved this site over to WordPress, I am now editing a new book, which I stand a chance of actually finishing soon: Rants – vol. 1. All the things posted on the site under the rants category, from the entire duration of the blog, rather heavily edited and updated to improve my crappy writing, and otherwise make them better. It’ll be about 200 pages, paperback size, and hopefully finished before the new year.
In the mean time, here’s a minor item I was working with a student, combining the triplet and 16th patterns from Jim Chapin’s Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer. Another one of my brutal cut and paste jobs. Mostly we just tacked on a different beat 4:
The idea is that these be a phrase ending— the ending cymbal/snare note will be an accent, tied through the following downbeat, followed by some time before doing it again. It’s kind of a Roy Haynes-like thing. The different between the rhythms can be somewhat subtle, and you’ll have to exagerrate to make it sound like anything.
Those are examples, you should do your own combinations. You can use the straight 8th note pages as well. We’ll do a little more soon on finding the connections between triplets and 16ths in jazz— they’re not necessarily as different as you might think.
