More three stroke ruff phrases

Some more jazz phrases with the open three stroke ruff— that’s the terminology for any occurence of three fast notes, in certain circles. Presented in the manner of Joe Porcaro’s Drum Set Method, in which he gives a lot of practical phrases for the various rudiments. Mostly ordinary punctuations and embellishments, or setups for an accent. A number of ones in 3/4 lean into a rubadub thing, and can be played meter-within-meter, in 4/4 time.

Swing the 8th notes, use the sticking of your choice. I’m having students alternate the ruff portion. You could also make five stroke (closed) rolls out of them, ending on the cymbal, or ending with a stick shot, a la the linked post there.
