Cracking 5/4: further listening

Aaaand I thought we’d end this series with some more listening, starting with some more modern things:

Jive Coffee – Brad Mehldau with Jeff Ballard

 Much more after the break:

Jive Coffee – Bill Stewart Trio
Same tune, different band.

Lennie’s Groove – Fly Trio – Mark Turner with Jeff Ballard
This is probably notated in 10/8, but I would think it in 5:

Dave Holland – The Sum of All Parts

Dave Holland – Conference of the Birds – COTB ECM – Barry Altschul on drums

Dave Holland – Make Believe
“Make Believe”, was written right before the recording and its 5/4 rhythm structure is one the bassist was introduced to through his association with Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem. “Anouar introduced me to this type of rhythm – which alternates two groups of five beats, first 3 & 2 and then 2 & 3 – that exists in Arab music”, Holland explains.

Dave Brubeck – Far More Blue – Time Further Out Columbia

Dave Brubeck – Far More Drums – Time Further Out Columbia

Dave Brubeck – Unisphere – Time Changes Columbia

Booker Little – Hazy Blues – Max Roach on drums
5/4 section begins after 5:20

Steve Coleman – Multiplicity of Approaches – Curves of Life

A few other things not available on YouTube:
Dave Holland – Processional – Extensions ECM
Hank Jones / Dave Holland / Billy Higgins – The Oracle – The Oracle EmArcy
Don Ellis – Concerto for Trumpet –  ‘Live’ at Monterey! Pacific
Brad Mehldau – I Didn’t Know What Time It Was – Art of the Trio, Vol. 1 Nonesuch

And a few more pop choices:

PJ Harvey – Water (h/t to my student Christine for this one)

Jethro Tull – Living in the Past – Stand Up

Sting – Seven Days

Mission Impossible theme – Lalo Schifrin
Like Brubeck’s Take 5, there’s almost no need to include this one, it’s so famous:

Johnny Staccato them – Elmer Bernstein
