The first thing you encounter at the top of the hill is the remains of the medieval fortress. What’s amazing about the site is the span of time it covers. It was occupied by the Etruscans 2500 years ago, was abandoned for 1200 or so years in which the Roman empire rose and fell, was reinhabited in the later middle ages, and was finally abandoned again 500-700 years ago.
