A couple of things cooking with the old paradiddle inversion Reed system. Here is a tom tom groove / solo method, creating an Ed Blackwell like vibe, using a combination of accented paradiddle inversions (RLLR-LRRL) in 16ths, and accented 8ths, over a simple ostinato with the feet.
All of the major Reed systems can be done with pp. 6-7, 10-11, 30-32, and 34-45 of Syncopation. Full page exercises could be read straight through, or played in repeating two-measure phrases.
In the examples the paradiddle accents on the drums are going to the high tom with the left hand, and the floor tom with the right— do whatever you want there. It sounds good leave some of the unaccented RH doubles on the floor tom as well.
This is just one possible orientation for this idea— an enterprising drummer may try putting the 8ths in different spots in the phrase, and try some different things with the feet. For some variety in the stickings, you could use my student Jack’s sticking variation.
