This is a real straightforward exercise for improving short single stroke fills, using unisons. Based on a normal interpretation used with Syncopation, by Ted Reed— playing the book rhythm as accents on the cymbals (with BD in unison), and filling in the spaces on the drums. Here we’ll play the cymbal hits as 8th notes, and fill with 16th notes, played in unison with both hands.
The cymbals could alternatively be played with both hands in unison, I’ve written them alternating:
single cym = R
two cyms = RL
three cyms = RLR
more, even number = start with two Rs then alternate
more, odd number = alternate, start with R
You could play p. 38 (or p. 41 for more of a challenge) a couple of times a day— once at a reasonable speed, once pushing it— and see a noticeable improvement with your 32nd note fills.
There are also some possibilities for how to do the drum portion— doing them as flams (rock & roll style, with both notes at a similar volume) on one drum, or with some set moves to the toms. The moves to the toms can be helpful on the longer runs.
