A couple of very dense pages here, giving every step of, and a number of possibilities for, turning some basic rock beats into figure and fill phrases. This should be the kind of thing you work with a little bit to learn the parameters, and then throw it away; it become a normal part of playing these grooves, and you know how to structure your practicing.
The process is similar to what we’ve done before, hitting crashes on some of the bass drum notes, and adding fills in the form of 8th note slash marks, on which you can play… one 8th note worth of anything. You could read the beats out of Funky Primer, with my students we’re looking at pp. 10-11 of Syncopation— they’re all fluent with turning those rhythms into rock beats.
