From the record East Broadway Run Down, by the late Sonny Rollins. The record is an old favorite of mine, but not one of his most famous. Recorded in 1966, the recorded quartet includes Elvin Jones of course, and Freddie Hubbard, and Jimmy Garrison. I picked this up from a used record store in a former gas station in west Eugene, Oregon, in about 1989.
The tune is a blues with a rubato intro and interludes. This is the first section in time, it starts at 0:19 and ends with the first interlude. I may attempt the next section, but it has a nutso drum solo, and will be a large task. Tempo is about 114.
We see a lot of our friend the RLB triplet pattern, handled a lot of different ways, with different dynamics and articulations, and timing. Something to notice while listening.
There is a fill on the second page that his very approximate, and is indicated as such. If you attempt to play it literally, it’s not going to come out right. There’s some deep structure to Elvin’s playing that… I need to invent some new kind of notation to even illustrate it. Not that I understand it. It’s not as simple as “it’s organic.”
