Two Reed funk tweaks

A couple of very little half time funk things, just significant enough to be worthy of mention. They’ll be folded into a complete method, if and when I get around to writing it. I’m going to try to finish some books this year, so…

This all happens automatically, while playing, by the way— that’s the only way it ever happened for me. All I’m doing here is noticing it, giving a method by which someone could work it up, if they wanted to. Or if they just want to entertain an idea for a moment. Not everything has to be worked out, just playing around with an idea a little is enough. I don’t want to give the impression that life is just an ever-expanding list of things to practice.

Double time filler
Half time funk feel with 8ths on the hihat— fill in the 16ths with the left hand, according to whichever of the three examples you prefer. Ghost notes, of course. Play the bass drum as is normal for this system.

Simple open hihat formula
Do this with the 8th-quarter-8th rhythm occurs throughout pp. 34-45 of Syncopation— open on the quarter note, close in the gap, on beat 2 or 4. The examples suggest a quarter note rhythm on the hihat, you can figure out what to do when you’re playing 8ths.
