UPDATE: ….aaand you snooze, you lose, a couple of these cymbals are already on hold by another party, so there will be a couple of substitutions!
CYMBALISTIC: Here we go, I’m heading out to Germany in 36 hours, bringing six great Cymbal & Gong cymbals. If you’re in Berlin or Bremen, reach out, and we can meet up, and you can play them. Or we can hang out, have a beer, and talk drum stuff, I’m easy.
This Wednesday-Saturday, 22nd-25th: Bremen / – Bahnhofsvorstadt
Find me at JazzAhead, USA booth / Origin Records, at Messe Bremen, Halls 6-7 – Findorffstraße, 28215
Next Sunday-Monday, 26th-27th: Berlin / Kurfürstendamm area
No official meet this time, I’ll just be hanging out and enjoying myself, and meeting people by appointment. Probably hitting the Hat Bar jam session at least one night.

Here’s a video of the cymbals I’ll be bringing, with heavily edited commentary— I can be a real boring guy to listen to speaking, when I set my mind to it. THE CYMBALS, though, are great, an excellent representation of Cymbal & Gong’s flagship models:
22″ Extra Special Janavar – “Maxine” – 2700g
You read right. At 2700g this is by far the heaviest 22 I’ve ever carried, of any type, and yet another example that weight doesn’t always mean what you expect it to, in terms of performance. Normally this would be major company-medium, this is just robust, perfectly functional jazz ride.
22″ Holy Grail – Turkish – “MacReady” – 2272g
Really solid Turkish-style Holy Grail. Full sound, long crash sound.
ON HOLD – 20″ Holy Grail – Turkish – “Fuchs” – 1706g
Light, airy jazz 20, this is exactly my quintessential idea of a “K” for a long time. Good main cymbal for light player, excellent companion to your 22″.
20″ Extra Special Janavar – “Hillie” – 1798g
With the heavy patina customary for this model. Compare with Fuchs— jazz 20 with a little deeper sound, a little more power and definition.
ON HOLD – 22″ Holy Grail – American – “Childs”
A lot of great examples of this model have been passing through my hands recently, and this may be the best one yet, all around. Big American “trans stamp”-type cymbal, plays a little bigger than the typical jazz cymbal, but perfectly functional in the role— that’s what they’re for.
22″ Extra Special Janavar – “Matilda” – 1950g
Heavy patina with three rivets. This is the “heaviest” of this recent group of light weight bashers— still 100g lighter than a normal thin 22. Moderately funky, opens up nicely when you wail on it, without losing basic definition.
Let me know early if you have your eye on one of these cymbals. If you’re not able to meet me in Berlin, I may be able to leave it for you, to pick up later.
If you come to JazzAhead, also check in with friend/friend of the site/great drummer Michael Griener at the Deutsche Jazz Union booth, he’s current chairman, and representing at the event. You can also see Michael play on Sunday the 26th in Berlin, 20:30-22:30 at Kühlspot Social Club, I’ll be there, barring grave bodily incapacity.
See you there! -tb
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
