Extending our previous hard form of this subtractive method— in which we read rhythms from Syncopation, and voice them on the snare and bass drums according to an underlying 8th note pattern, BSSB-SBBS. We could have done this with the simple bossa thing first, but I felt like writing this up.
Because you’ve done your homework on the previous thing, this will be an easy way to put together a vocabulary, and get oriented, in 7/4, very quickly. This can lean into a funk feel, or an ECM type feel, or a loose form of bossa, or a baiao feel.

The warmups give you some of the basic structures of the pattern, to help you interpret on the fly, reading from Syncopation— which you do by reading a single measure, plus the first three beats of the next measure, and repeat that. Do that with Syncopation pp. 6-7, 10-11, 30-32, and 34-45.
With the full page exercises, you can make a one measure repeating groove out of every two measures of the exercise, combining, for example measures 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, etc:

I also cut and pasted a page from Reed to put it in 7/4, but do the above thing.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
