Double bass, natural sticking

This is almost nothing, I’m just writing out some examples of a simple idea for a student, to go with the verbal explanation I gave in the lesson. If I were playing double bass, I would be relying on natural sticking for any alternating singles— with the left foot falling on the 8th notes, which it is already trained to do with the hihat, and the right foot handling the irregular part, any es and as.

Here I’ve given some possible ostinatos with running 8ths in the left foot, and the stickings for the 8th and 16th rhythms in Syncopation— pp. 22-28.

You can do this leading with the right foot instead of the left, of course. Not a bad idea if someone wants to be fluent with this kind of drumming.

That student has also been working with Bobby Rondinelli’s book, Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming— I wasn’t expecting much, but it’s actually a really solid book, very worthwhile for anyone doing this. I need to give it a full review sometime.
