Some patterns that might be helpful along side the original EZ bossa system— itself really good for not just developing a simple, functional bossa vocabulary, but also for developing rock beats in a hip way. These will lean into one shading or another— the first two a samba feel, with the bass drum leaning on the 3, and the other two more of a baiao feel.

I hope it’s clear what’s happening with this by now— we’re voicing the rhythms in Syncopation on the snare and bass drum, to correspond with an underlying pattern. Sometimes it’s better to think of them as a rule— the first samba pattern, for example: “BD on beat 3, SD on everything else.”
Read from Syncopation, pp. 10-11, 30-32, 34-45. Play the full page exercises all the way through just for fluency interpreting the system, for actual groove ideas stick with one and two measure groove phrases— any two measures from the above pages.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.

I just thought it was time to say how much I like your site
My name is Bobby Cleall and, although well up there in age, I play for the Glenn Miller UK Orchestra.
My other claim to fame is ,I wrote Up Close book for Steve Gadd which started the avalanche of similar books.
Keep it up!
