Fast tempo warmups/fallbacks

Some patterns both for giving our fast tempo playing— jazz playing— a solid, simple foundation. Also something to fall back to, when playing a tempo too fast for you. It’s an entry point, and a retreat. Also see my myriad other fast tempo systems, and burnout pages, and paradiddle builders— this page will duplicate parts of those. Same stuff different ways, for different days.

We’re supposed to be developing our fast spangalang beat— as ambitious players, who play with very skilled players, and who don’t want to get burned. Developing that takes time, and you have to maintain it. But there are a lot of other not-hard things we can do to help with that. I don’t want to live or die based on the state of my chops.

There are no time signatures because we’re floating this over fast 4/4 time, really without regard for barlines. And, though we’re talking about jazz playing, they’re notated as 8ths and 16ths to discourage you from swinging the rhythms— whatever tempo you practice them at, you’re building a technique for playing them very fast, and swinging them doesn’t help that.

I think it’s best to do these as double time, over a slower tempo straight loop or track.
