Nice piece of early 70s funk from Andy Newmark playing on Let Me Have It All by Sly Stone, from Stone’s album Fresh. It’s busy, with a lot of variety, based on a loose idea of a two measure groove, still completely focused on building groove. He fills through the 1 at a number of points, he doesn’t land with a strong downbeat.
The intro has you looking for the 1 a little bit, but it is right on the first note of the track. The transcription starts 28 seconds in, right where it starts sounding settled. Tempo is 94 bpm.

Listen and get the vibe of it, the way he handles rhythm on the big notes. Don’t get too caught up with the exact letter of the transcription— there may be some studio tomfoolery happening, like a second drum track hiding in the mix. For example, in bar ten, the unaccented open hihat are is very back in the mix, while the accented ones very forward— it doesn’t sound like Newmark playing dynamics, it sounds like another track sitting differently in the mix. You can hear them adding the second track sporadically on the outro. I think there was a lot of weed happening during the session.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
