A set of practice loops for one of my students— faster tempos, maybe challenging rhythms, that encourage some improvising. Check out the other recent pages of embedded loops as well.
Eddie Palmieri / Cal Tjader – Bamboleate – 212/106 bpm
This is from one of the first records using the Mozambique as it’s known in north American music. A Songo rhythm will also fit. Here’s the original recording.
McCoy Tyner – Hymn Song – 151 bpm
This vamp inspired this page of stuff, but any 8th note things anyone can think of will be a good starting place for improvising with it. Tune is from the album Supertrios, with Jack Dejohnette on drums.
Masada – Beeroth – 128 bpm
Here’s a live video of this tune played at a faster tempo.
Gateway – Nexus – 165 bpm
Gateway is John Abercrombie on guitar, Gary Peacock on bass, Jack Dejohnette on drums. The tune is from the album Gateway II.
Masada – Halishah – 174 bpm
This is in 5/4 time, from the album Hei. Here’s a page of syncopation rhythms in 5, if that will help.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
