Here’s a method for practicing filling in figures, that will work with most Reed systems, and involves accents on both the cymbals and the drums.
For the examples we’ll use 8th notes accented to match the rhythm in the book, played on the drums. Any accented notes that line up with a figure (which we’ll decide), we’ll catch on the cymbals, with the bass drum in unison. I used the rhythm figures from McCoy Tyner’s Hymn Song and Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage.

Use any Reed solo/fill system that’s appropriate. Playing the examples you can use an alternating sticking, or RH lead— RH playing all the accented notes, LH playing unaccented ones.
