Very occasional quote of the day: a gig

A remember when I was 15 or 16 [in about 1940], I used to work Coney Island sideshows. I worked a place called Darktown Follies and we would literally play 18 shows a day. Can you imagine that? And I loved it! I had all that energy.

We’d be on stage half an hour and off half an hour. On the weekends, at Coney Island, we’d start at ten o’clock in the morning and we’d go ’til four or five o’clock the next morning. Then you’d get off and look for someplace to jam.
