Extending a pattern – RLB

An item I was working on with a student— playing a simple pattern, and growing it by doubling some notes, or repeating two notes. We’ve seen most of the patterns before, this is just an angle. We want to have more than one angle on the same thing— for our own playing, and for helping students.

I’ve written the patterns in 16ths, but they can be any rhythm value, floated over some music in any time signature. Where it might be helpful, I’ve shown how they lay as 16th notes or as 8th note triplets over a quarter note pulse.

Float these endlessly over a practice loop at any rate of rhythm that’s comfortable, in any meter. Add repeating hihat rhythm (played with the foot) appropriate.

The bass drum part can also be played with the left foot, or with both feet in unison.
