In the middle of a big fill unit with several students. Here are some sketches of single measure fills with 8th notes in 2/2, with minor embellishments, for moderate tempos. Stickings are left unspecified— you’ll have to wing it, and come out on the cymbal on 1, that’s the game. It’s a jumping off point.
Move around the drums freely, accent freely, mostly alternate, mostly land on the cymbal with your right hand, but also be able to land on your left. And of course the literal letter of the fill is not the point, these are cues, that you will develop through playing them. You don’t even have to play the right pattern, just try, and play from it as a starting idea. The only mistakes are getting lost, or not playing good time.
Or not making it exciting enough. Make it sound good, get a big sound.
