I guess we’ll call them groove patterns. These are mostly not what you would normally play on a song in 12/8. I wrote it for a student, just for familiarity with this time signature, and feel, which can be a little mysterious for some people at first. So in addition to our normal materials with more practical grooves, here we’ll emphasize some unusual spots in the measure to force an accounting for the full measure, not allowing any subdivisions to be mysterious.
My advice for the student is to just play through the patterns, perhaps while counting out loud— in 4, counting dotted quarter notes. It’s quick and easy, anyone could play it a few times over a couple of weeks, then do some improvising along similar lines, and have learned everything it has to offer.
