Sketching out a thing I was working with after listening to some Jack Dejohnette. We do a lot of things with Syncopation with the cymbal and bass drum in unison, this introduces some variations in the cymbal rhythm. We learn a system, then learn ways to open it up so it’s not pure formula— normally you do that just through playing, but maybe we can get to the thing we want quicker.

I wrote this for myself, but briefly: We’re varying the cymbal part wherever that syncopated 8th-quarter-8th figure (notes or rests) appears in the book, along with just bass drum, and with that highly useful subtractive voicing of BSSB-SBBS, and with a RH lead system, with the left hand filling in.
This all may prove to be not even be necessary— you could just learn the repeating cymbal rhythms at the bottom of the page, along with the above systems, and that could be enough to get the results we’re looking for.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
