Fills with Stone

For a student, here is a summary of some things we did in a lesson— putting some singles exercises from Stick Control (pp. 8-11) onto the drum set. We’ll make a two measure phrase out of it, with a funk beat in 2/2 derived from the 8th note sticking portion, and the pattern in the book as a fill. It’ll be right hand lead style, with the right hand on a cymbal (plus BD), and the left hand on the snare. The 16th note portion is played on the snare drum:

The bass drum rhythm on the groove portion matches the right hand on the 8th notes in the book pattern. There are some options for how to do that, that aren’t significant enough to explain— if what’s on the page doesn’t make sense to you, just improvise a groove for that part.

On the fill measure, the right hand part could also be played on the toms. Or both hands. The 16th notes can also be moved around the drums however you want. It’s a good idea to practice a single move a number of times. Left hand leading patterns from the book will be a little awkward— you can either end the singles before the 1, or add a bass drum on 1 of the repeat, and catch an accent on the cymbal with the left hand.

More important than the specific exercise is to learn a general approach to handling drumming materials— when you look at any sticking pattern, these are some musical applications that may be suggested by it. And vice versa, to some extent. This is how you think when you’re sitting at your drums and open up Stick Control.
