Transcription: Charli Persip hihat/comping

A little bit of Charli Persip here, playing On Green Dolphin St. with Red Garland, on Garland’s 1961 album Bright And Breezy. This is on Sam Jones’s bass solo, so we’re getting a good look at how to play the hihat and comp with it, in a modern way.

Tempo is 190, the transcription begins at 2:11 in the track.

The tune is 32 bars long, and Jones solos for two choruses. Persip plays just hihat on the first chorus, and comps with the snare drum and bass drum on the second.

Noting the sounds of the drums, if you listen to the whole track, it sounds like it’s a little bebop set, with the toms cranked, with a very stiff, bright, little medium weight ride cymbal— 18″, maybe smaller. It could almost be a flat ride, or a Zildjian mini-cup, except this recording pre-dates those by several years at least. The hihats have a more normal K sound.
