Jack’s RLB lesson

Yesterday I worked with a student on some connecting possibilities based on the highly useful RLB triplet solo/fill pattern. We have some directions to go with that: squeezing more notes in, dropping out a note, changing the rate of rhythm.

This is strictly concerned with the patterns as patterns; what to do with them musically (beyond moving them around the drums) and how to fit them into a musical phrase is a different problem— we’ll talk about that another time.

Be able to play each of these repeating, over a quarter note pulse— either played on the hihat with your foot, or supplied by a metronome. Then you can play all possible combinations of them, one time through each thing— patterns 1-2, 1-3, 1-4… 2-3, 2-4, 2-5… 3-4, 3-5, etc. All stickings: RH only, LH only, alternating, both hands in unison.

Also see this page of related alternating flam rudiments. And my Gary Chaffee-type linear materials, that stuff is similar, and will be helpful.
