Developing a Weckl lick – 01

Hot on the heels of the six stroke roll post, here is a related thing, a flashy fusion lick by Dave Weckl. I pulled it off of a Paquito d’Rivera album in about 1987, and never developed it in a real systematic way. It takes a little bit of jiggering to repeat it, and connect it with other stuff.

Move it around the drums, especially the accents.

You could play it RLLBBL, like a six stroke roll, which would make it easy to repeat, but somehow it just makes it a lot stupider.

Here’s the tune I pulled it from— he does it several times during the drum solo. This is really the pinnacle of a certain drum sound, this punchy 80s thing. It infected infected my touch, and this is the way I naturally hit the drums, in service of this sound. I’ve been trying to get away from it ever since.
