Basic left hand variations with a basic form of the an Afro 6/8 groove, with the “short” bell rhythm. Finally updating a page I did way back in 2012, that I still use all the time, for myself, and with students. The notation there is not the friendliest, so I’ve rewritten it in all 8th notes and 8th rests. Also I don’t like the whole last half of the page. This new one is better.
While I’m being very productive writing new books, hopefully I’ll get my Afro 6 book finished some tim in the new year…

Learn them as written, then move the left hand around the drums— one note per drum, or one group of notes per drum, for example (S = snare, H = high tom, L = low tom):
S/H – S/L – H/L
SHSL – HSHL – LSLH
SHL – SLH
LLHH – LHHL – LLLH – LHHH – LHLL HLHH
Play along with this Eddie Palmieri loop when you’re ready.
I am happy to help you with any of the materials on the site, and with anything else drumming related— contact me for private lessons, online world wide, or in person in Portland, Oregon. All levels of players, and all people, are welcome.
